Longtime island doctor dies

Charles G. Weispfenning, MD, died at home on May 12. He was 84.

Dr. Weispfenning served Vashon as a doctor for 36 years and was known to many as an old-style country doctor, who believed access to health care should not be based on ability to pay. He often traded medical services for goods, from fresh eggs to paintings.

He retired from his practice, Vashon Plaza Medical Clinic, in 2011 because of failing health. At the time, he said he had not made much money, but he had stayed true to his ideals and offered a rural practice that reflected them.

“It’s been a struggle, but it’s been worth it,” he said. “I don’t regret any bit of it except that I wish I could go on forever.”

A full obituary will appear in The Beachcomber next week; services will be announced soon.
