A Vashon man has been sentenced to two months in a King County alternative program after being convicted of child pornography changes earlier this year.

Gregory Richard Garcia, a 49-year-old homeless man, pleaded guilty and was convicted of second-degree possession of child pornography in January after an iPod that belonged to him and contained child pornography was found at a local baseball field.

On Feb. 22, Garcia, who served one day in jail after being arrested, was sentenced to serve two months in the King County Community Center for Alternative Programs (CCAP), to begin on Friday. CCAP participants are assessed individually, screened for drug use and placed in county programs with the goal of helping them change their behaviors.

According to sentencing papers, Garcia must also register as a level-two sex offender, complete DNA and HIV testing and pay $600 in fees to the county. He has also been ordered to have no contact with individuals at the Vashon Dance Academy. Garcia was said to spend time at Vashon Plaza, where the dance studio is located. He is currently banned from the Vashon Library due to an unrelated instance.

In a report included in sentencing papers, a county psychologist who assessed him said he believed Garcia was at a relatively high risk of obtaining more child pornography but at a relatively low risk of committing a hands-on offense.

Garcia is one of two level-two or level-three sex offenders currently living on Vashon. Names of level-one sex offenders, considered not likely to reoffend, are not made public.
