Man jumps from Vashon ferry

A man jumped off a Vashon ferry today and was rescued from the water by ferry workers, according to George Brown, assistant chief of Vashon Island Fire & Rescue.

A man jumped off a Vashon ferry today and was rescued from the water by ferry workers, according to George Brown, assistant chief of Vashon Island Fire & Rescue.

The incident occurred at around 1:45 p.m. on Friday on the Issaquah ferry as it was traveling between Fauntleroy and Vashon.

Brown said the man, who is not a Vashon resident, jumped off the end of the ferry as it was in motion and was nearing the Vashon ferry dock.

“He jumped of his own accord,” Brown said.

Once ferry workers learned that someone had gone overboard, the ferry backed up, a rescue boat was launched, and the man was pulled out of the water.

“Ferry workers did their job very well and did a rescue,” Brown said.

Emergency responders were called to the Vashon ferry dock to examine the man. He had no serious injuries or signs of hypothermia, Brown said, but was transported to an off-island hospital for evaluation.

According to a Washington State Ferries alert, the incident caused a ferry delay. Another alert at about 4:15 p.m. said the Issaquah was back on schedule.
