Open house at Camp Burton on Sunday

Camp Burton, a retreat and event site that also offers a variety of summer camps, will hold a free Community Camp Day on Sunday.

The event, located at the camp on Burton Loop, will feature several traditional summer camp activities, including archery, arts and crafts, swimming, kayaking and the chance to make s’mores over a campfire.

Michele Rutschow, Camp Burton’s director for the past two years, said she encounters islanders who do not know what the camp offers — or that it exists. This event is meant to change that.

“We want to foster the sense of being part of the community,” she said. “This is a community connection event.”

The event will also feature live music from noon to 3 p.m., including a performance by Seattle’s Total Experience Gospel Choir at 1:30 p.m.

In the summer, Camp Burton offers overnight Christian camps for youth in grades three to 12. It also offers New Horizons, an overnight Christian camp for those ages 16 and up with disabilities. Beyond that, the camp is available year round to rent to other camps or organizations for day use, banquets and overnight retreats.

Camp Burton will host the event from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 2. For more information, see campburton.com or find it on Facebook at CampBurtonVashon.

The camp is located at 9326 Bayview Drive.
