Scene and Heard: Islanders run to support XC team, safe graduation

More than 50 people braved the cold and the fog Saturday morning for the Vashon Running Club’s annual Jingle Bell Fun Run.

The event benefits the island’s cross country teams, and this year included a bake sale to support Safe Grad Night, a longstanding island party organized by VARSA and hosted by parents of high school graduates that gives island youth a chance to celebrate without alcohol or other drugs.

“We want to keep the kids engaged, together,” said Safe Grad Night planning committee member Debbie Banner. “Something safe where they can have fun, and not have to worry about driving, drinking and drugs.”

No rain or snow made for a good race this year, VHS cross country coach Bruce Cyra said. He counted about 63 participants, with ultramarathoner Bjorn Syse and past cross country captain Ursa Medeiros tying for first. Cross country captain Madeline Yarkin and Pirate sprinter Alana Bass came in next, also tying with each other.

Cyra thanked volunteers Casey Lawrence, David Wilke, Nick Keenan and Jesse Dungan for preparing the course for the run.
