Three more unofficial mayor candidates join race

Vashon’s unofficial mayor race is heating up as three more candidates have thrown their hats into the ring, bringing the total number of mayoral hopefuls to five.

Last week, Bettie Edwards of Little House fame announced her run to benefit Vashon Community Care (VCC), Strawberry announced her run to benefit the Vashon Maury Community Food Bank and Glinda the Good Witch threw her crown in to benefit Vashon Youth & Family Services (VYFS).

Bettie Edwards

Edwards has served two terms on the VCC board and decided to run for unofficial mayor because she “totally, totally believes in the cause,” she said Monday. She is passionate about those who live at VCC and said she is proud to continue the tradition of involving the residents in the race.

“Anything I can do that adds sparkle to their lives, I will get a kick out of it,” she said. “It will bring some great silly laughter to let them think they’re playing politics in this race.”

The center’s residents will make Edwards’ donation buckets that should be showing up at Vashon businesses in the coming weeks.

Strawberry

After decades of making jam, sitting atop pies and being Vashon’s quintessential fruit, Strawberry has decided to dust off her roots and join Vashon’s 2017 unofficial mayoral race to benefit the island’s community food bank.

“Just like the Vashon Food Bank, I’m deeply rooted on this island and I believe that nutritious and delicious food is something to which everyone should have access,” she said in a statement.

Look for the food bank mason jars around town to cast votes for Strawberry, or write a check to Vashon Maury Community Food Bank, PO Box 1205, Vashon, WA 98070, with “Strawberry for Unofficial Mayor” in the memo line.

Glinda the Good Witch

Glinda of the South (Glinda the Good Witch) is running for Unofficial Mayor of Vashon supporting VYFS.

“Living in Oz,” Glinda said, “I have had direct experience witnessing the need for Heart, Courage and Direction. VYFS has spent 40 years treating all clients with open hearts, compassion and understanding.”

Glinda will be making appearances at multiple island events throughout the summer and around town. Cast votes online at vyfs.org, or in the Glinda Boxes placed in local businesses. Every dollar is a vote.
