Toy Swap provides eco- and wallet-friendly gift options

There is no cost to participate and all are welcome to drop off or pick up gifts.

For the second year in a row, Open Space for Arts & Community has organized a Toy Swap — a chance for islanders to donate lightly used toys, and/or shop cost-free for stocking stuffers or larger items to make the holidays merry and bright.

Community members are invited to drop off clean, lightly-used toys from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, Dec. 5-7, in marked bins at the entrance of Open Space, located at 18870 103rd Ave SW.

And beginning at 12 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, there will be large tables set out in Open Space’s main lobby — a time for others to drop off or collect toys from the tables as they fill up.

Open Space producer Janet McAlpin created the event last year to provide islanders with an opportunity to find children’s gifts for the holidays without the financial or environmental impacts of buying new ones.

“We’re trying to create a relaxed space that allows our community to share gifts without a price tag or waste,” McAlpin said.

McAlpin said that it was heartwarming, at last year’s Toy Swap, to see so many kids coming in with their parents to pick out gifts for their siblings and friends.

There is no cost to participate and all are welcome to drop off or pick up gifts.

That said, the following items won’t be accepted at the Toy Swap: dirty, broken, ripped, chipped, ragged, chewed or marked items; baby gear including car seats, strollers, cribs and play yards; anything with missing parts or in disrepair, or items with possible cutting, choking or lead hazards.

Oversized items may be accepted at the organizers’ discretion.
