Tour the Vashon High School campus from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16. Before the tour, Eric Gill, the school district’s capital projects manager, will briefly explain the two campus overhaul options the school board would like Islanders to consider. The group will then tour the buildings to get a look at current conditions.

The school board, meanwhile, will meet at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Thursday, July 10, at Courthouse Square. On the agenda is the first reading of the school district’s 2008-09 operating budget as well as discussion about a possible accelerated learning program.

VIFR board may hire new chief

The Vashon Island Fire & Rescue board will meet in a closed executive session from 4 to 6 p.m. tonight to evaluate the candidates for the department’s vacant fire chief position. A hiring decision may be made and announced after the meeting.

Council seeking input on ballot

The local elections committee for the Vashon-Maury Island Community Council is creating the ballot on which Islanders will vote for board members. The group hopes to submit its proposal at the July community council meeting and vote in August after much discussion.

Help work on the ballot. The group’s next meeting is at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, at Café Luna.

Blood drive tomorrow

Puget Sound Blood Center will host a blood drive from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at Vashon Lutheran Church, 18623 Vashon Highway, S.W. Staff will break for lunch between 3:15 and 4 p.m.

Help hydrate dogs at festival

Vashon Island Pet Protectors (VIPP) is seeking Islanders’ help in preparing free dog water bottle kits for distribution during Strawberry Festival.

Come to the Land Trust Building on Bank Road from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, July 11, for a kit-making work party. The group will also make signs and posters for VIPP to use at the festival. Supplies and snacks will be provided.

VIPP is marching in the grand parade this year, and anyone who helps make water bottle kits is welcome to march. If you’d like to participate, contact Joanna Gardiner at 567-0560.
