Vashon Island Coffee Dust brings spice to morning cup of joe

Local company uses March Madness style bracket to find newest flavor.

For those searching for a way to bring an additional flavor boost to their morning cup of coffee, offerings by Vashon Island Coffee Dust may just fit the bill. Now, Vashon Island Coffee Dust is using a March Madness-style bracket to find their newest flavor.

The business, operated by islander Christy Clement, began in May 2021. The company currently produces six different spice blends to flavor coffee without using any sweeteners, which can be added to coffee grounds prior to brewing or added in after.

Clement, a new coffee drinker herself and a self-described health conscious individual, said she enjoyed the ability to change up her morning routine but disliked the additional sweeteners and additives found in many commercial coffee flavorings.

Submissions for the seventh and newest flavor of Coffee Dust have been received, and will be placed into a bracket to determine the new flavor. The creator of the winning flavor will receive a free sampler pack of the original Coffee dust flavors, the very first packet of the new flavor of Coffee Dust and naming rights to the new flavor.

Individuals can vote on their favorite flavors on the business’ Instagram page, @vashoncoffedust, as the flavor tournament progresses. The newest flavor will be available for purchase in late April.

Clement originally sold Coffee Dust at the Vashon Farmer’s Market, but has since expanded its scope. Vashon Island Coffee Dust is currently available at Vashon Island Baking Company, Anu Rana’s, Maven Meals, Handmade on Vashon and multiple retailers across the country.

All Coffee Dust flavors are produced on-island at the Vashon Senior Center’s commercial kitchen, with the help of Kim Roeser and Danny Kopsak. Vashon Island Coffee Dust also donates 10% of its profits to Vashon HouseHold, as Clement is “very passionate about affordable housing,” and also serves on their board of directors.
