Jasmine Charlotte Azpiri of Vashon, daughter of Tressa Azpiri and David Hakala, and granddaughter of Ray and Edith Aspiri, graduated from Willamette University on May 11, 2008, with a bachelors degree in cultural anthropology.

Jasmine Azpiri

Jasmine Charlotte Azpiri of Vashon, daughter of Tressa Azpiri and David Hakala, and granddaughter of Ray and Edith Aspiri, graduated from Willamette University on May 11, 2008, with a bachelors degree in cultural anthropology.

She graduated cum laude with a 3.76 GPA. Azpiri was one of 15 graduating seniors to be awarded the “senior certificate,” out of more than 40 nominees, in a class of nearly 500 students.

Azpiri will be traveling to Kenya in June and July to volunteer in a hospital and on a farm. She intends to join the Peace Corps in early 2009 and later attend graduate school in global and public health.

Deborah Teagardin

Islander Deborah Teagardin has obtained her real estate brokers license. She has more than three years experience as a full-time real estate agent with John L. Scott. Licensing requires the successful completion of 240 hours of real estate law, real estate brokerage and property management coursework. A state and federal exam must then be successfully completed.

Teagardin has been an Island resident off and on since 1970. She lives in Ellisport with her husband Robert and dogs Lucy and Tucker. Her daughter and son-in-law, Bret and Melana Taitch, live on Paradise Ridge with her two grandsons, Jeremiah and Aiden.

Islander Kellen Roy Christophersen earned a bachelors of science in industrial technology – vehicle design from Western Washington University in winter quarter 2008.

Sean Donnelly

Sean Michael Donnelly of Vashon earned a bachelors of arts degree in business administration – marketing from Western Washington University in winter quarter 2008.

Jenna Kush

Jenna Kush of Vashon graduated on May 17, 2008, from Tulane University. Kush was one of approximately 1,170 undergraduate students in Tulane’s Class of 2008.

Tulane University’s Unified Commencement was held on May 17 in the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. More than 12,000 family members and friends gathered to celebrate with the graduates. The ceremony included all the pomp and circumstance of a traditional commencement with a New Orleans twist, featuring bagpipes, herald trumpets, confetti cannons, balloon drops, a second-line jazz procession and Mardi Gras Indians.

Founded in 1834 in New Orleans, Tulane offers degrees in architecture, business, law, liberal arts, medicine, public health and tropical medicine, the sciences and engineering and social work.

Islander Shawnti Rose Rockwell earned a 4.0 GPA at Western Washington University in winter quarter 2008.

The Vashon Cemetery District board will hold a meeting at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at the Vashon Cemetery located at 19631 S.W. Singer Rd.

The Vashon Park District board of commissioners will hold a meeting at 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, in Ober Park.

King County Water District 19 will hold a board meeting at 6:30 p.m. June 10, in the district board room at 17630 100th Ave. S.W.

sheriff’s report

May 6

11:30 a.m.: A reporting party stated that a cashier’s check and paperwork had recently been stolen. Someone had entered her locked vehicle in a parking lot and taken her paperwork and check needed for refinancing her home. The incident took place in the 17400 block of Vashon Highway.

May 13

12:30 a.m.: While conducting a driveby at the IGA Market at 17639 100th Ave. S.W., a police officer spotted two sets of skis that were suspiciously placed in between a couple of soda vending machines outside the front entrance of the grocery store. The officer secured the skis.

May 15

9:15 a.m.: On the 9300 block of Cemetery Road, an officer responded to a call of suspicious circumstances. A suspect had asked students waiting for their school bus whether they wanted to try some mushrooms. The students replied, “No.”

The suspect stated that he was a teacher, and said, “These are magic mushrooms, and if you try them, you will appreciate nature more, and they will bring you luck.”

The report states that the suspect gave the mushrooms to the students.

May 16

3:56 p.m.: An individual reported via the abandoned vehicle hotline that a car had been parked at S.W. 204th Street and Vashon Highway for the past seven days. The telephone number of the vehicle’s registered owner could not be located in the phone directory.

May 17

12:00 p.m.: At KVI beach, a reporting party’s vehicle was vandalized — its paint was scratched with a sharp object.
