A young woman, islander Katie Chale, has died in the hospital after being involved in an accident with a bus on Vashon Highway on Wednesday.

As word of Chale’s death came to Vashon Thursday morning, officials confirmed that she died at Harborview after being listed in critical condition.

Chale, 22, was a 2010 graduate of Vashon High School and graduated from the University of Portland this year.

George Brown, assistant chief at Vashon Island Fire & Rescue, said the accident occurred at about 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Chale’s car and a private tour bus carrying children were traveling in opposite directions on Vashon Highway near SW Shawnee Road when they collided.

She was airlifted to Harborview, and the driver of the bus was also transported to Harborview. Eighteen of the children on the tour bus were also taken to the hospital with minor injuries as a precaution.

Officials at the scene said they believed the bus had crossed the center lane and hit the car, and a Seattle news agency reported the same thing. However, DB Gates, a spokeswoman for the King County Sheriff’s Office, said she would not have information on how the accident occurred until after an investigation is complete.
