Frances Cook-Eikenberry

Frances Cook Eikenberry passed away on August 22, 2011 at the age of 99. Born Frances Ethelyn Jones in Huntley, NE, she was the eldest of four children.

Frances graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in Spokane, WA and received her teaching certificate from Cheney Normal.

A teacher for 32 years in Alaska and Washington, she was well known as the kindergarten teacher on Vashon. She was the first grade teacher at Fauntleroy Elementary for 20 years and retired in 1974.

Frances met Russell Cook while teaching in Ketchikan, AK. They married in 1936 and moved to Vashon Island in 1941 where they raised their two children, John and Victoria. The family enjoyed riding and raising horses. Russell passed away in 1968.

Frances was fortunate to find love again later in life. In 1984, she married Otto Eikenberry. Frances and Otto participated in many Island social events including traveling with the Senior Center Vagabums. Otto passed away in 1999.

Active in the Vashon community as a member of the Presbyterian Church, Grange and Eastern Star, Frances was the honorary mayor of Vashon for 14 years.

She belonged to the Red Hats and Toastmasters, and participated in activities at the Senior Center. She enjoyed traveling and visited many foreign countries.

Frances was very close to her family. She is survived by her sister, Isabelle Pearce, Reno, NV; three grandaughters, Jan Cook and Elizabeth Cook, Seattle, WA, and Michelle Cook, Playa del Carmen, MX; four stepchildren, three great grandchildren, and numerous step-grandchildren, nieces

and nephews.

A memorial service will be held for Frances at the Vashon Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 3rd at 3pm. Please bring your fondest memories of Frances to share.

The service was followed by a potluck supper

in the Fellowship Hall.
