Walter Wegener

Walter H. Wegener Sr. of Battle Ground, Wash., died at age 82 on March 19 of complications from strokes. Wegener was born Nov. 6, 1925, in Seattle.

Wegener grew up on Vashon Island where he lived for 39 years; he subsequently lived in Sheridan, Ore., for 20 years, and Belfair, Wash. He married Margaret “Peggy” Douthwaite in 1946. Wegener and his wife moved to Battle Ground in 1990. Peggy died in 1997.

Wegener served in the Marine Corps during World War II. He was a floral nurseryman for 30 years. After retiring in 1996, he enjoyed growing flowers to give away and a large vegetable garden, the produce from which he donated to the food bank.

He is survived by daughter Jenny Wegener of Winnemucca, Nevada, daughter Kathleen Wegener of Boring, Ore., and son Walter Wegener Jr. of Toppenish, Wash; sisters Helen Graust and Margaret Burton; three grandchildren and one great-grandson. According to his family, this generous, loving, gentle, honest man will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.

A family service has been held. Remembrances can be made to the North County Community Food Bank, P.O. Box 2106, Battle Ground, Wash., 98604. Arrangements have been made by Layne’s Funeral Home in Battle Ground.
