LETTER: County is not listening to concerns about density

I don’t understand. The overwhelming preponderance of comments submitted about the community plan update shows that islanders oppose a radical increase of density in Vashon town. Ignoring this citizen input, the newly released draft continues to propose development that far exceeds water availability and disregards our appeals for small-scale, incremental development with policy recommendations to encourage non-profit, community trust models for permanently dedicated affordable housing.

What is the point of engaging in a community planning process when input is disregarded?

We are told this is the only way to provide affordable housing on Vashon, but many folks suggest other options to meet the need here. To be opposed to massive density increases in our town zoning is not to oppose affordable housing or diversity in our community.

If built out, the proposed zoning far exceeds the projected need for affordable housing. We are told that the radical density increase allowed under the plan with “density bonuses” won’t result in a development surge because lack of water will prevent that. But why are we encouraging private developers with this zoning for huge density increase at all?

This is not good public policy. It is irresponsible to leave water commissioners trying to meet the provisions of a bad town plan. The whole point of zoning laws is to assure orderly and appropriate development at a pace and scale that is in accord with community values and desires.

Please wake up to the importance of what is being proposed. This plan defines the island’s future. Be a water protector for our community and make your voice heard. Comment to Joe.McDermott@kingcounty.gov and Bradley.Clark@kingcounty.gov. The deadline is May 1.
