Letter from the fire chief

Looking ahead to 2024, exciting developments are on the horizon.

Dear Vashon Island community,

As we prepare for an exciting year ahead, I take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey we’ve had at Vashon Island Fire & Rescue in 2023. It has been an absolute honor serving as your Fire Chief, and I am immensely proud of the strides we’ve made together in enhancing our services for the safety and well-being of our community and visitors.

Last year brought significant growth to our team, with the addition of 12 career firefighter/EMTs filling positions that have allowed us to elevate our service levels. The commitment of these individuals has been instrumental in our collective success.

One of our key achievements was the reintroduction of CPR and AED training opportunities, empowering our community with life-saving skills. Additionally, on August 1st, the overwhelming support of voters allowed us to reset our fire levy, securing vital funds. This milestone paved the way for the opening of the Burton fire station on October 23rd, equipped with two full-time firefighter/EMTs to better serve our community in a timely manner.

Looking ahead to 2024, exciting developments are on the horizon. Two new ambulances and a fire engine are set to join our fleet, replacing essential frontline vehicles. We are also gearing up to launch our Mobile Integrated Health program, a strategic initiative to address low-acuity calls with resourcefulness, ensuring a higher service delivery to our community. And effective January 1, we will no longer be balance billing Vashon residents for ambulance transports, which affords our island greater access to heath care.

As we enter the New Year, my passion and energy to serve our island grows with the many opportunities ahead in 2024. Together, we will continue to explore ways to enhance the safety and service delivery of Vashon Island Fire & Rescue.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to each member of our community, the Board of Fire Commissioners, and our dedicated team for their unwavering support.

Wishing you and your families a safe and healthy 2024!

Sincerely,

Fire Chief Matt Vinci
