With three games behind it, the boys’ basketball team is on an early-season winning streak.

“We are playing some good basketball,” said coach Andy Sears. “We are excited about it.”

So far, the team has defeated Granite Falls High School, Sultan High School and Kennedy Catholic High School from Burien.

Ten members of the team returned this year, and that has proved helpful.

“It is nice to start with a team with experience,” Sears said. “We can draw on what we have done in the past.”

The most exciting game of the season so far, Sears said, was the game against Kennedy, which is  a strong team. The Pirates played them on Saturday at the Tip Off Classic in Auburn.

The last four minutes of the game were great basketball, Sears said. The Pirates had been behind and did not pull ahead until the last seven seconds of the game and won, 51-50.

While Sears said it would be nice to go to State this year, right now the team is simply trying to play better each time.

“The name of the game is improvement,”  Sears said. “That is really what our focus is —  right now the focus is on improvement and playing as well as we can.”

The boys play next at home at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16.
