The Vashon girls basketball team played three games last week, including a non-league contest with a select traveling team from Australia, the Mornington Breakers.

Despite giving up a lot of height to the visiting Breakers, the Pirates battled gamely, managing to keep the score even through much of the game.

Vashon trailed by 3 at the half and cut the Breaker lead to 2 as the third quarter ended with the Pirates trailing, 23-21. Mornington pulled away in the fourth quarter on their way to a 38-25 win.

Vashon scoring was led by Siena Jannetty (10), Taegen Lynch (7) and Anya Quig (5). Annika Hille added two points, and Kate Atwell added one.

On Tuesday, Jan. 15, the Pirates played at Charles Wright. Reminiscent of the previous night, the Pirates kept the game within reach. Vashon trailed by four points at halftime, but outscored the Tarriers 11-4 in the third quarter, taking a 28-25 lead by the end of the quarter.

The Pirates missed on early opportunities to extend their lead in the fourth quarter before the Tarriers rallied, defeating the Pirates by a final score of 45-32.

Quig led the Pirate scoring with 8 points, while Lynch and Jannetty added 7 apiece. Kalie Heffernan returned from an early-season knee injury to add 6, and Ally Clevenger had 4.

On Friday, the Pirates played the Cedar Park Christian Eagles. Vashon had a depleted roster due to illness and played with only two substitutes. Despite that disadvantage, the Pirates were down only one point at the half, 10-9.

The Eagles, however, pushed their lead to 7 points by the end of the third quarter. A game Pirate squad cut into the Eagle lead twice in the fourth,  but fell short in a 34-25 loss.

Vashon’s starting five for the game accounted for all the scoring, with Quig leading all scorers with 10 points. Jannetty (5), Heffernan (4), Hille (4) and Lynch (2) accounted for the remainder of the Pirate points.

Vashon played at Seattle Christian on Tuesday prior to press deadline and will play at Cascade Christian on Saturday.
