The Vashon High School girls’ soccer team accumulated a loss and a win last week, bringing its season record to 4-1-2 so far.

In the team’s second league game against Cascade Christian last Thursday, the Pirates were defeated 1-0 on the home field. Initially, both sides played well and seemed evenly matched. The Pirates even had some close attempts that left the home crowd baffled as to why they weren’t winning yet.

Somewhere in the first half, though, the Pirates lost their formation and scrambled to try and regain it. Cascade took advantage of the opportunity and put the ball in the back of the net. The Pirates refused to give up and fought back hard. They were relieved, though, when the second half came and they had a chance to regroup.

The thrilling second half, with the Pirates controlling possession of the ball, had the home crowd out of their seats and the bench screaming. Vashon sophomore Dalia Aladin and teammate Kristi Walker were playing extremely well together up front and had some great combinations that led to beautiful chances. As the minutes ticked down, the fans got louder and louder, anxious to get the goal to tie the game. Unfortunately, there were some injuries, and the Pirates were left with only one healthy sub.

Kat Andrus, Grace Riggs and Aimee Olson were all dealing with ankle injuries, and the coach did not allow them back on the field. Changes had to be made to the line- up, which left the Pirates with a weaker attack. Despite being down to one sub, the Pirates still kept battling and were disappointed when the final whistle blew, signaling the end of the fight.

Head coach Alan Zoltie was proud of how the team fought back and didn’t give up for a second. Zoltie named senior midfielder Mira Peterson the athlete of the week because of her performance and ability to play anywhere on the field.

On Saturday, the Pirates took on Port Townsend in a non-league game. Vashon secured a 8-0 win in Port Townsend with Vashon freshman Sydnee Adams, who typically starts in the goal, scoring six of Vashon’s goals.

The team is slated for a short string of away games and is scheduled to play at home next on Tuesday, Oct. 13, against Seattle Christian.
