Island track and field athletes perform well at meet

Looking ahead, Vashon High School will be hosting the 1A Sub-District qualifying track meet.

On Saturday, April 22, the Pirates Track and Field team traveled to Sammamish High School for the 13th annual Bellevue Christian School Invitational meet.

The Vashon High School girls’ team placed second overall, out of 15 other schools, with 103.5 points. The Pirates just edged out third-place Bellevue Christian, which had 103 points.

Lynden Christian had the overall winning girls’ team, with 153.5 points.

The boys’ team placed 11th overall, with 18 points. Freshman Bodie Thomas continued his winning ways by taking first in the boys’ 1600 in four minutes and 36 seconds.

Alec Pottinger took second in the boys’ shot put, with a personal best mark of 44 feet and two inches. Madeline Yarken took second in the girls’ 1600, in a personal best time of 5 minutes and 31 seconds. Lena Puz took the victory in the girls’ shot put, with a personal best mark of 31 feet and 9 inches.

Amelia Medeiros placed first in the girls’ discus, with a mark of 103 feet and four inches. Alana Bass finished first in the girls’ long jump, with a mark of 16 feet. Bass also placed first in the 200-meter dash in 26:96 seconds, and took first place in the 400 meters, with a personal best time of 1 minute and 23 seconds.

On April 26, the Pirates returned home to host Charles Wright, Annie Wright, Life Christian and Seattle Christian at Vashon High School. The girls’ team would score 131 points and claim victory over these other teams.

The boys scored 43 points, which placed them third overall in the team scoring.

Individual highlights for the boys included Alec Pottinger winning the shot put, with another personal best mark of 45 feet and 2 inches. Pottinger took second in the discus with a throw of 109 feet and 4 inches. Christian Kincade placed third in the mile with a personal best time of 4 minutes and 59.67 seconds.

Individual highlights for the girls’ team include Lena Puz winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.21 seconds. Puz also placed first in the shot put with a personal best mark of 30 feet. She was the lead-off runner in the girls’ 4×100 meter relay which cruised to victory with a time of 52.95 seconds.

Amelia Medeiros had a personal best throw of 109 feet and 9 inches to win the discus competition.

Alana Bass set a personal best time in the 400-meter dash stopping the clock at 59.91 seconds to claim the victory.

Cecelia Guenther took first place in the girls’ mile with a personal best of 5 minutes and 55 seconds.

The Pirates’ next track & field meet will be the Charles Wright Academy relays on May 5. Looking ahead, Vashon High School will be hosting the 1A Sub-District qualifying track meet on Saturday, May 13.
