Islander and longtime open water swimmer Wendy Van De Sompele on Saturday swam from Tramp Harbor to Portage, making her the first known person to swim around Maury Island.

Van De Sompele did the more than 14-mile swim abiding by Channel Swimming Association rules, meaning she did not wear a wetsuit and could not hold onto the boat when taking breaks to eat. The feat took more than seven hours to complete.

Her partner, islander Peter Ray, said that she has been talking about doing the swim for more than a year, but the weather and tide conditions were right on Saturday.
