The Vashon high school boys’ lacrosse team, the Vultures, opened its season with an overtime victory against  Division I Bellarmine Prep, 13-12.

Vashon, the defending Division II conference champions, opened the game with a barrage of goals, taking the early lead. In the second quarter, Bellarmine fought back, and the first half ended in a 6-6 tie. After going down a goal in the third period, Vashon capitalized on a two-minute power play, scoring four goals to take the lead.

In the fourth quarter, Bellarmine’s goalie and defense stiffened while its offense came to life. Regulation time ended with the score tied 12-12 and Vashon once again on a man-up powerplay. Unable to score on their man-up, the two teams traded offensive possessions with Vashon senior Winter Krimmert scoring the overtime winning goal.

Krimmert scored six goals on the night and dominated face-off play, winning all but two draws. Other scorers included freshman Max Schira, with two goals and an assist; Elliot Carlton, with two goals, and senior Ezra Ende with three goals.

Coach Dan Macca praised the team after the game.

“I am extremely proud of our effort and determination. We found a way to win, and every player contributed quality minutes.”

Vashon Valkyries

The Vashon High School girls’ team already has four games behind it. Led by 11 seniors, the team has a 3-1 record so far.

“I think things are shaping up really well,” said coach Larry Dubois.

The team has an influx of new members this year, topping out at 24 players.

Dubois credited the girls with excellent team work and strong fundamentals.

Several players are ranked at the top of the league, he said, including attacking player Anneke Steneker, who leads the league in scoring; midfielder Mykah Shiosaki, who leads in draw control, and defender Zina Carroll, who ranks near the top in ground balls.

The girls play at home next at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 1.
