The Vashon Pirates boys’ basketball team suffered their first defeat in nearly a year, as they lost 49-45 to the defending 2A state champion Squalicum Storm last Saturday in Bellevue. Earlier in the week, a fourth-quarter Pirate surge put away the visiting Fife Trojans, 58-43.
On Saturday, Vashon returned home with a second place finish in the Port Townsend tournament against 1A Port Townsend, 2A Tenino and 2A South Whidbey.
Vashon’s Raptors U12 boys soccer team clinched the number-one spot in the Gold Division on Saturday by beating the second-place team 1-0. The opposing team, the Gig Harbor Whitecaps, had beaten the Raptors with a fluke goal at the beginning of the season, said coach Mark Scheer.
The Vashon High School Pirates boys’ basketball team began the quest to defend its state championship gold ball with two convincing wins this past week. On Wednesday, the Pirates suffocated the Seattle Academy Cardinals, 66-23. On Saturday, they defeated the Port Townsend Redskins, 70-32.
