The Vashon Island Rowing Club wrapped up its fall season at two Seattle regattas Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5 and 6.

The Frostbite Regatta, a 1km sprint race hosted by the Green Lake Crew and normally indicative of the weather conditions for the event, drew 22 teams, mostly from the Seattle metropolitan area, and some from as far as Bellingham, Spokane and Oregon. Mother Nature provided a crisp, cool, sunny day with little wind, making for smooth water.

Vashon entered eight events and placed first in four of them and second and third in two other races.

The women’s master quad, with Kim Goforth, Lana Krisman, Marilyn Kleyn and Debbie Jackson, placed first with a time of 3:46.8. The junior men’s open varsity quad, with Ryan Bingham, Gus Magnuson, Tate Gill, Baxter Call and coxswain Ally Clevenger, was first with a time of 3:17.0.

The women’s junior third varsity four, with novice rowers Bryn Gilbert, Maya Krah, Teagan Lynch, Kai Li Scheer and coxswain Rayna Shinn, took first place in 4:03.50. These same rowers were joined by Emma Dubois, Maiselle Kearney, Mary Lawrence, Kirsten Girard and coxswain Clevenger in the women’s open novice eight and placed first among the field with a time of 3:49.60.

In the men’s open novice four, with Charles Elliott, Nathaniel Petram, Elliott Carelton, Ben Zaglin and coxswain Delaney Anderson,

Vashon placed second with a time of 4:02.20. Those same rowers were joined by Eli Sedgemore, Charlie Penwick, Dayton Connolly and Preston Scheer to race the men’s open novice eight. Under the direction of coxswain Shinn, the rowers placed third in 3:41.28.

On Sunday Vashon rowers entered three events at the Head of the Lake regatta, hosted by the Lake Washington Rowing Club and the University of Washington. The 5km race started in Lake Union along “boathouse row”. Rowers wound beneath University Bridge into Portage Bay and through the Montlake Cut to Lake Washington, where the course took an exciting turn back toward Husky Stadium to the finish line.

Vashon took first place in the men’s junior quad, rowed by Bingham, Magnuson, Gill and Call, in 18:31.859.

Rayna Shinn, who coxed the boat, said, “It was surprisingly easier than I expected, given all the turns in the course. We came around those corners nicely and did well.”

In the women’s junior quad, Vashon placed second with a time of 20:52.015. Rowing for Vashon were Avalon Koenig, TerraJane Ripley, Halimah Griffin and Katelyn Carter.

The men’s master eight, coxed by Sarah Warner with rowers Bruce Morser, Colby Atwood, Bob Horsely, Ed Zapel, John Jannety, Chad Magnuson, Steve Hayworth and Jeff Hoyt, took third with a time of 19:16.564.

Competing in the mixed master quad, Vashon rowers Debby Jackson, Gary Schoch, Nancy Foster-Moss and Jim Hauser took third place with a time of 22.10.699.

The team now has a break for a few months until the busy spring season begins in late January.
