Track athlete breaks longstanding record at meet

At at Charles Wright Academy last week, the girls’ team placed first overall, with 181 points.

On April 12, the Vashon High School Track & Field team piled on the points in a seven-team meet that was held at Charles Wright Academy.

The girls’ team placed first overall, with 181 points. The boys came in third, with 75 points.

One of the many highlights was freshman Bodie Thomas, who broke the school record in the boys’ 3200 meters by running a time of 9:36. He was able to grab the early lead, and pace himself through even, consistent splits during this eight-lap race.

The school record in this event was previously held by Owen Farcy, who had run the race in 9:37.87, in 2001.

Thomas also took first place in the boys’ 1600, in a time of 4:45.91.

Other athletes in the winners’ circle included Alec Pottinger, with a personal best throw of 39 feet 9.5 inches in the discus.

On the girls’ side, Alana Bass took first place in the 200 meters in 27.46, the 400 meters in 1:03.57, and the long jump, with a mark of 16 feet 1 inch. Bass also anchored the girls’ 4 x 100-meter relay team to victory, with a time of 53.71 with her teammates, Annabelle Mockel, Amelia Medeiros, and Lena Puz.

Emily Harrington took first in the girls’ 800 meters, in a time of 2:32.18. Lena Puz placed first in the girls’ 100-meter hurdles, with a personal best time of 17.20. Puz also won the shot, put with a mark of 29 feet 9 inches. The girls’ 4 x 400-meter relay team, consisting of Cecelia Guenther, Hannah Coicaud, Emily Harrington, and Madeline Yarkin, took first with a time of 4:46.44.
