Two VHS track athletes compete in state finals, finish in top 20

On Friday and Saturday, May 26 and 27, the 1A State Track &Field meet was held at Eastern Washington University in Cheney. Kat Andrus and Lauren Jenks, both graduating seniors, represented the Vashon High School Pirates.

Day one of the competition saw Andrus finish in 15th place in the girls’ long jump with a leap of 15 feet 5 inches being her best effort of the day. Later that afternoon, Jenks placed sixth in her heat and 12th overall in the girls’ 800-meter run in a time of 2 minutes 29.02 seconds.

On day two of competition at Roos Field in Cheney, Andrus placed 16th in the girls’ javelin with her best throw of 83 feet. In her signature event, Andrus placed ninth overall in the triple jump with her best effort being a mark of 34 feet 2.75 inches.

Another graduating senior, Virginia Miller, who lives on Vashon, but attends Annie Wright High School in Tacoma, placed third overall in the javelin event with a best throw of 137 feet 5 inches.

Looking ahead, next year Andrus is planning to attend Washington State University, Jenks is planning to attend California State Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo and Virginia Miller is planning to attend Stanford University.
