Valkyries and Vultures set the tone for fruitful season

Valkyries won 17-8 against Tahoma on Tuesday, March 29, and the Vultures have continued their unbeaten streak.

Vashon Lacrosse is off to a great season and we are all incredibly proud of the players, coaches, and the community for coming together to support lacrosse and these awesome kids.

The Valkyries won 17-8 against Tahoma on Tuesday, March 29, in a complete team performance. The Valkyries’ zone defense disrupted the Bears’ attack, making it difficult for them to score from open play. Goalie Ninabelle Mullins ended the night with nine saves, further denying the Bears when they managed to break through.

The Valkyries’ attack displayed great creativity and ball movement, with almost all of the goals coming from open play and involving multiple players. The Valkyries’ next home game is at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, at the high school.

In their first game in three years, the U14 Valkyries team of middle school girls settled into the season. Playing short-handed they fell to the visiting Tacoma Tigers by a final score of 11-5. The high point of the game was the strength of the new zone defense which had multiple stops late in the game.

Alar Demir anchored the defense in goal with multiple saves early on to keep the game within reach at the half. Exceptional team passing highlights the Valkyries’ teamwork and allowed them to retain possession. This team has seen immense growth early in this season. It will be fun to see this group come together as a cohesive offensive as the season progresses.

We are still looking to add players to this team. One competitive edge other teams have over our Vashon team is that they are bigger teams and can substitute players before they get tired. If there are any middle school girls out there who are slightly interested in lacrosse, come check it out! The U14 Valkyries’ next home game is at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 24, at VHS Stadium.

Vashon Vultures boys’ high school lacrosse has continued an unbeaten streak, bringing home another win on March 28 at Gig Harbor, contributing to their 4-0 record. It was another highly competitive game, tied multiple times into the second half. With a few key late goals by the Vashon offense, as well as the defense all but shutting down Gig Harbor in the second half, the Vultures secured another win against a local rival.

The Vultures hope to continue their winning ways with a home game at the VHS stadium against South Kitsap at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 5 (prior to the publication of The Beachcomber) and a rematch at 7 p.m. Friday, April 8, at Peninsula High School. The next Vultures home game is at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 18.
