The Vashon Pirates wrestling teams competed at sub-regionals last weekend.

The boys competed at Port Townsend, while the girls wrestled at North Mason to decide which competitors would advance to next week’s regional tournament. Both teams saw wrestlers advance to the next level of competition.

The girl’s wrestling team placed fifth overall. Sophomore Lena Puz won her weight class, junior Kyla Scheff and sophomore Alara Demir took second and senior Amelia Medeiros took fourth. The girls will compete at White River High School this Saturday, in an effort to qualify for the state tournament next weekend.

The boy’s team placed second and had eleven competitors advance to the upcoming regional wrestling tournament at the Vashon High School gymnasium.

Seniors Colin McIntyre and Chase Bradrick won their respective weight classes, while seniors Marcus Acevedo, Michael Ryland, and Gregorio Chavez all took second place.

Vashon had six wrestlers win their consolation finals match to win third place and continue wrestling in the post season: seniors Jonah Herndon, Olí Neilson, and Daniel Shannon, sophomore Will Henley, and freshmen Oliver Scriber and Jacob Lawrence.

In addition to the successes on the mat, Colin McIntyre was voted League Wrestler of the Year, Richard Rivas was voted Middle School Coach of the Year, and Anders Blomgren was voted Co-Head Coach of the Year.

Come out and support the boys team on Saturday, Feb. 10 at Vashon High School at 11 a.m., as they compete to determine which wrestlers will represent Vashon at the annual Mat Classic state wrestling tournament at the Tacoma Dome on Feb. 16 and 17.
