Vashon Ultra registration now open

Registration for the 2017 Vashon Island Ultramarathon & Trail Run, which will take place on June 3, is now open.

Since 2010 the event has provided athletes with the chance to participate in not only an organized trail run or ultramarathon, but to run on previously unconnected trail systems through woods and open space. The event offers two running options, a 50-kilometer ultramarathon and a 10-mile trail run. The courses include local and county parks (Island Center Forest), natural preserves (Fisher Pond) and private property.

Both on- and off-island runners compete. Forty-five percent of last year’s 145 participants were islanders, according to the event’s website. Vashon’s Aidan Cyra, 23, took first place in last year’s trail run, while Bend, Oregon’s, Rod Bien, 43, finished first in the 50K ultramarathon, nearly 20 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

Prices for registration are $65 for the ultramarathon and $45 for the 10-mile trail run. Prices increase to $75 and $55 respectively after April 30.
