Vashon’s offense stacks up the yards in win over East Jefferson

Vashon improved their record to 1-1 in Nisqually League play.

Vashon High School football took a 35-8 win over East Jefferson at home on Saturday, Oct. 7.

Senior running backs Teigin Monson and Greg Chavez both rushed for over one hundred yards on Saturday. Monson had 11 carries for 118 yards, while Chavez ran for 107 yards on 15 carries.

Vashon (1-4) improved their record to 1-1 in Nisqually League play, while the East Jefferson Rivals (0-6) dropped to 0-3 in the league.

East Jefferson scored on the very first play of the game on an 89-yard kickoff return, and a 2-point conversion followed to take them to an 8-0 lead. The Pirates responded with a quick four-play 74-yard touchdown drive, narrowing the score to 8-7.

First quarter highlights included a 24-yard reception by Ricky Rasmussen and a 22-yard rushing touchdown by Greg Chavez. Later in the quarter, quarterback Chase Bradrick scampered 40 yards on 3rd and 31 to move the ball into East Jefferson territory. Vashon, however, was unable to convert on a 4th and 3 and turned the ball over on downs.

Teigin Monson added a 15-yard rushing touchdown at 8:50 of the second quarter, giving the Pirates their first lead of the game at 13-8. Bradrick connected with Rasmussen for a 63-yard reception on 3rd and 9 to increase the margin to 19-8 with 4:32 left in the second quarter.

Vashon received the second half kickoff and proceeded to march down the field. A 15-yard reception by Sawyer Ranney nearly went the distance as he tiptoed the sideline, unable to stay in bounds. After a 35-yard Bradrick rush deep into East Jefferson territory, Greg Chavez smashed through for a 2-yard touchdown, bringing the score to 27-8 at 9:18 in the third quarter.

Sawyer Ranney closed out the score in the fourth quarter on an 11-yard touchdown reception from Bradrick, clinching the 35-8 win at VHS stadium.

Saturday was the best offensive output of the season — Vashon racked up 434 yards of total offensive, rushing for 296 yards on 39 carries and passing for 138 yards. The offensive line created some beautiful running lanes, and the defense was able to shut down the Rivals by winning the battle at the line of scrimmage.

Stellar defensive line play mixed in with blitzing linebackers proved to be too much for the offense of East Jefferson.
