Vashon’s wrestling wunderkind Chase Wickman capped a perfect season and took home his second state championship last weekend at the Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome.

His performance in the 1A 113-pound weight class was as dominating as any other wrestler on the floor, regardless of weight or school size.

He kicked off day one pinning Gerardo Morales of Connell and Tyler Izatt of Montesano, both in the first round. His third match against Tony Williams of Montesano went the full six minutes, but Wickman coasted to a 15-3 win. The final match pitted him against Sebastian Mqorales of Forks. The championship win came in the second round, when up 8-1, he pinned the Spartan to take the top of the podium.

When asked about what this second championship meant to him, he replied, “It’s like eating two slices of pizza, more satisfying — but at the same time it just makes you more hungry because you’re like … dang, that pizza was good … I want more.”

With his senior year coming up, Wickman has a real shot at becoming the first three-time state champion from Vashon.
