It will be raining men at a singer-songwriter showcase set for 8 p.m. Friday at Red Bicycle Bistro.

The evening, presented by Vashon Events as a follow-up to its recent showcase of female island songslingers, will feature eight island men who have made names for themselves as composers, balladeers, rockers and instrumentalists.

Taking the stage one at a time, Jeff Kanzler, Chuck vanNorman, Ron Hook, Jacob Bain, Gregg Curry, Will van Spronsen, Mark Wells and Joe Panzetta will all present songs.

Bain grew up on Vashon and came of age as the frontman of the island band Trolls Cottage. With his current band, Publish the Quest, he’s toured to countries in Europe and Africa where the group has performed at festivals and in music halls, recorded with local artists and conducted music workshops and jam sessions with underprivileged children.

Hook is another island music superstar — he is the longtime frontman and founder of the seminal Vashon band Subconcious Population. Many local performers count him as a mentor and inspiration to their work. His performance on Friday will be a rare solo effort.

Curry, Kanzler, Panzetta, vanNorman, van Spronsen and Wells, each in his own distinct way, call on American genres including blues, jazz, country, rock and gospel in their music.

The concert, to be hosted by Allison Shirk, has a $10 cover charge, and is for all ages until 11 p.m., when the venue become restricted to those 21 and older.
