Uber service now available on Vashon

Vashon residents and visitors looking for another way to get around the island — and beyond — now have another option: Uber.

Seattle Uber driver Salina Milstein, who lives on Vashon, is offering the app-based transportation service on the island weekday mornings and late at night on Fridays and Saturdays. She also provides a Seattle-Vashon pickup and delivery service and hopes to recruit other drivers as well.

“I am trying to work with islanders to expand the service on the island,” Milstein said. “It is great for a lot of people.”

Milstein has been an Uber driver in Seattle for three months, but she believes many on the island would benefit from the service. To that end, she has recently decided to set aside early to mid-morning hours — approximately 6:30 to 10 a.m. — and late weekend nights to serve Vashon.

Mornings are important for a lot of people, she said, ranging from commuters who might need a lift to kids and teens who go off island to school. In both cases, she said, she would take customers to the ferry dock, as they could easily pick up another Uber on the other side, leaving her on Vashon to be available to others.

Additionally, she said she knows that one of the reasons many people have wanted to have Uber service on Vashon is because of impaired driving. She plans to be available on Friday and Saturday nights, she said, and will give her contact information to bartenders, who can call her or pass the information on.

While Uber typically requires a smart phone, Milstein noted that the island has a sizeable community of seniors, who may not have the devices. To address their needs, she will also provide rides when contacted via text (preferable) or when called.

Milstein is also offering her own version of Uber’s delivery service. If islanders need something in Seattle, such as items from Costco, she can pick up and deliver the order to them; she charges between $25 and $40 for this service, depending on the locations involved.

When people have downloaded the Uber app, Milstein said that it will show when she is on the island. However, she cautioned that if they are near the ferry dock, it could ping someone from off island. If that should occur, cancel that ride and try again. Passengers should look closely at that, she said, so an off-island driver does not come to Vashon, creating a surprise cost.

Finally, she said, she is recruiting other islanders to become Uber drivers to help meet the transportation needs on Vashon. She will share her experiences and help them get set up, adding that driving part time is fun and provides extra cash.

“I have every confidence that we will be able to expand the service and bring more people on board, and the island will love it,” she said.
