Weekend storm kept fire department busy

The storm that swept through the region over the weekend brought no severe problems or injuries, but it kept Vashon firefighters busy.

Between 9 a.m. Saturday to Sunday night at midnight, the fire department responded to 32 calls, according to Vashon Island Fire & Rescue Assistant Chief Bob Larsen. At least 22 of the calls were storm-related, he said, involving downed trees or wires. Approximately five more were automatic fire alarms, activated by returning power after power failures.

Larsen said the department was “well staffed” for the storm, with both chiefs also responding.

“It was hopping. That is what keeps us young,” he said.
