Girl’s basketball wins one, loses one

The Vashon High School girls’ basketball team played two games last week to a mixed bag of results.

On Tuesday, Jan. 24, the Charles Wright Tarriers came to Vashon to play the Pirates for a second time. Vashon traveled to Charles Wright on Jan. 6 and won 40-32. This time, Vashon came into the Charles Wright game strong knowing that they could beat Charles Wright for a second time. Although they were again without starter and sophomore Olivia Larson due to a concussion, Charles Wright was without their star rebounder and sophomore RubyJoy Pikes, who managed to pull down nine rebounds at the teams’ last meeting.

Vashon won the tip and quickly put the first two points on the board thanks to sophomore Ava Butler. At halftime, Vashon had 19 points on the board and seven fouls. Charles Wright had 9 points and three fouls on the board at the half.

The second half was less eventful, but Vashon held its lead with a strong defense. During the second half, the Tarriers managed to score 5 more points while Vashon scored 11 more and won 30-14.

On Friday, Vashon traveled to Seattle Christian to play that team also for a second time. Vashon lost to Seattle Christian at home 30-41 on Jan. 10 and lost again at Friday’s game 31-45.

The Pirates’ junior varsity girls’ team only had one game last week against Charles Wright since Seattle Christian does not have a JV girls team.

The girls had previously beaten Charles Wright 48-5, but last Tuesday, the JV girls had only one substitute player. They still managed to pull out an impressive win, beating the Charles Wright Tarriers 29-9.

Both the varsity and JV girls have two games left in the regular season. The varsity team sits at fourth in the Nisqually league with two wins and four losses.

The varsity girls will take on Cascade Christian at 5:30 p.m. Friday at home before a home game against Bellevue Christian at 5:30 p.m. Monday.
