Pirates end successful season with 17 wins and 3 losses

Standout performances by numerous players put the team over the top.

The Vashon High School boys soccer team (VHS) has continued to have great success this season.

On May 2, the team played at home against Klahowya Secondary School for senior night. Senior night is always bittersweet because it is the last time the seniors will play on their home field, even though this year, the Pirates would kick off at the stadium one last time in playoffs.

The seniors celebrated were Evan Serebryakov, Danny Boyle, Isaac Harrison, Leo Neidinger, and Oliver Hill. Captains Nick Zuckerman, Oliver Churchill, and Moses Trundle-Strachan were also celebrated.

The game was close, with a 2-0 win, with one goal by freshman Lewis Thompson, assisted by freshman Issac Newcomb, and the other goal by sophomore Rowan Marceau-Roache assisted by Zuckerman.

On Thursday, May 4, VHS traveled to face off against Seattle Christian in its last scheduled league game. The Pirates came out with a whopping 10-0 win, with Thompson scoring his 18th and 19th goals of the season — along with Serebryakov and freshman August Kampmeier scoring braces of their own. Sophomore Xan London-Chambers provided two assists.

District Semifinals were held at home against Cascade Christian.

This was the third time that the Pirates had faced Cascade Christian: VHS had come out on top the first two games and the playoff game was no different.

Marceau-Roache scored from a cross from the right side made by Newcomb. Trundle-Strachan scored with a header from a corner kick taken by Zuckerman. Junior Orion Knowler played a 30-yard bomb to Harrison, who put it away. Harrison assisted Thompson for the fourth goal of the game.

Thompson returned the favor to Harrison with a beautiful give-and-go combo, allowing Harrison to score his second goal of the night. Thompson backheeled the ball to Newcomb, making it his second assist of the game. Trundle-Strachan put away a PK, and Newcomb had the last goal of the day with a rebound. The final score was 8-1.

The District Championship game on May 11 was against Bellevue Christian — also the third time the two teams had met this season. As was the case with Cascade Christian, the previous two times the teams had faced off, the Pirates won. It was no surprise the Pirates came home with the first-place title.

Junior Ellis Cudaback scored the first goal which was a rebound off of a shot made by Marceau-Roache. Harrison crossed the ball to Marceau-Roache, who volleyed the ball to the back of the net. Trundle-Strachan had a shot that rebounded from the keeper, giving Thompson a follow-up opportunity. Newcomb quickly passed to the middle of the box, lining Thompson up for another goal.

The last goal of the night started from a set piece 30 yards out, taken by Knowler to Harrison, who redirected the ball with a one-touch to Thompson who put it away for a hat trick.

The Pirates took home first place in their district with a 5-0 win.

On May 20, in the second round of state playoffs (Vashon had a bye in the first round), the Pirates kicked off against the Overlake School, both teams traveling to Quincy and the 95-degree Eastern Washington heat. After six shots from both teams, along with three corner kicks for the Owls and six from the Pirates, there were no goals scored within the first 79 minutes of play.

Unfortunately, Overlake squeezed in a single goal in the last minute of regulation, ending the Pirates’ successful season. The Pirates’ overall record ended at 17-3.
