The Vashon Road Crew, a group of Island walkers, held a dress-up, potluck dinner to celebrate the first anniversary of the establishment of “United Walkers’ Way” — a fund to which they contribute and which will benefit Island human-need-based nonprofit organizations.

On a walk last year, the conversation included acknowledgement of how much benefit the walkers received, not just from walking but also from the generous sharing of conversations. Another walker noted that it bordered on therapy and sure was less expensive!

The walkers decided to establish a “Buck-a-Walk” fund, which soon evolved into a full-fledged account into which Road Crew members deposited money with the goal of having other Islanders also benefit from the walks. Over the year, the account accrued $1,700. The donors held a fancy dress dinner, potluck of course, to discuss potential beneficiaries and voted to distribute the funds to two Island nonprofits: Vashon Household and Vashon Youth & Family Services.

The Road Crew will continue walking and contributing. We invite new members to join us in one or both of these activities. Contact me at 463-4164 or Susan Haworth at 463-3509 for information.
