Superintendent search

The school board will host a public meeting about the superintendent search, where Islanders will be invited to discuss the school district’s strengths, it challenges and the skills, attributes and experiences they hope to see in a new superintendent.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. this evening, Oct. 29, at the Vashon High School library.

THURSDAY 30

Drugs and teens

PTSA is sponsoring a parent information night, “Drugs, Alcohol & Your Teen,” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in the Vashon High School library. Stephen Bogan, a chemical dependency counselor, will present information on various topics, including developmental effect of drugs and alcohol on the teenage brain, peer pressure, what parents can do, warning signs and resources available for help.

There will be time set aside for questions and answers.

SATURDAY 1

Farmers Market

The Vashon Farmers Market will be open in the Village Green from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1.

Farmers will sell Island-grown fruits and vegetables of fall, including pie pumpkins, apples, winter squash, leeks, potatoes, carrots, cabbages, dinosaur kale, parsnips and much more.

Fall nursery plants will also be available, as this is the best time for planting them.

The Monkey Tree will have hot soup, fresh baked croissants, cinnamon rolls and sourdough bread.

Island artisans will offer services and goods, such as knife sharpening, warm hats and scarves, mason bee houses, outdoor furniture, handbags, cutting boards, wooden spoons and more handmade goods as weather allows.

The Saturday Farmers Market is open for the season through Dec. 13.

Adopt-a-cat day

Vashon Island Pet Protectors will host an Adopt-A-Cat Day every Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the new VIPP Adoption Center at 12200 S.W. 243rd St.

‘Fall for Orcas’

Orca Season is from October to January in Vashon-Maury waters. The Vashon Hydrophone Project (VHP) for Puget Sound whale research invites Islanders to “Fall for Orcas” on the Vashon Theatre’s big screen at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 2. VHP partners Mark Sears, Ann (Orca Annie) Stateler and Odin Lonning will discuss local research and conservation issues pertaining to the endangered southern resident orcas.

The program features Sears’ slides of whales in Puget Sound and a Tlingit killer whale-honoring song by Lonning and Stateler.

Learn from experts who have studied orcas in Island waters for decades why the whales come here and where you might see them. Admission is $5, and proceeds benefit the VHP.

Kids’ book group

The Kids’ Book Club meets at Vashon Bookshop at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3, to discuss this month’s selection: Pizza, Pigs and Poetry by Jack Prelutsky. Newcomers are always welcome.

Great books

Great Books Discussion Group will discuss “Physics and World Philosophy” by Max Planck from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 3.

The Great Books Group has been meeting at the Vashon Library for 30 years. All Islanders are welcome to join in for stimulating discussions about really great books.

No registration is necessary.

UPCOMING

Election night party

Island progressives are invited to a “Farewell to the Thief,” an election night party sponsored by the Backbone Campaign and UMO Ensemble from 7 to 11 p.m. Election night, Tuesday, Nov. 4, at the “O” Performance Space.

There will be non-stop cable news updates on election results projected in multiple locations for compulsive tracking.

There will be live music by 5:01, Kat Eggleston, Watermark and Great Rain. Steffon Moody will be the evening’s emcee. UMO will be there, and the night will include humor, beer, wine, popcorn, kids’ activities and fun for the whole family.

In the case that a stolen election is suspected, organizers will convert the party into an organizing opportunity and be on the streets in the morning.

Tickets are $10 and kids are free. Tickets are available at Books by the Way and Vashon Bookshop.

Welcome salmon

A welcome back salmon celebration will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at Judd Creek in Paradise Valley, (just west of the corner of 111th Avenue S.W. and S.W. 204th Street).

It’s nearly time for the annual return of our salmon, and organizers want to to send out a joyful noise to welcome them.

Islanders are invited to bring friends, instruments, poems or anything that will support this annual celebration.
