Grateful to the school district | Letter to the editor

I want to express my thanks to the Vashon Island Schools Foundation and its continued efforts to raise money for the Vashon School District. As the parent of four kids (one soon to be at the high school, one at McMurray Middle School and two at Chautauqua), I can’t say enough good things about the school district.

We moved to Vashon three years ago because of the outstanding reputation of Vashon’s public schools. We have never regretted our decision and in fact, not a week goes by that I am not thankful for our decision to move to Vashon. Our kids have and continue to receive an education that far surpasses anything we experienced in our previous district.

Our kids have had the opportunity to attend Camp Waskowitz, the Forest Stewards program and soon McMurray’s Exploratory Week. They have read about the Holocaust, slavery, deciduous trees and even learned how to write in cursive, something I thought was a lost art.

We have watched our children grow into smart, inquisitive, funny and thoughtful young people, due in part, I believe, to the well-rounded education they have received on Vashon. They are being taught by teachers who truly care about their ideas and questions and who encourage them to be thinkers, doers and active members of their community.

I cannot say enough good things about the quality of education in the Vashon School District. I would encourage everyone to give as much as they are able to the Vashon Island Schools Foundation to ensure the district’s ability to retain its fabulous teachers and programs. It is true that our children are our future, and I am proud to have the children of Vashon be the leaders of tomorrow.
