The Vashon Film Society will present its 10th annual Outdoor Movie Night at the Vashon Theatre on Saturday.
According to the Vashon Film Society (VFS), the outdoor movie is VFS’ gift to the community and supports the group’s mission to help preserve the theater.
The movie shown this year will be the 1971 classic family musical “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” the original film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s children’s novel.
In honor of the 10th anniversary, VFS also will offer a number of Willy Wonka-themed activities for all ages. The festivities will include a Golden Ticket candy bar contest, a “scrumdiddlyumptious” cake from Snapdragon Bakery, a beer garden for adults and commemorative Violet Beauregarde bubble gum for kids.
Stageworks will furnish a giant high- definition screen that will be set up all day in the theater’s parking lot and will show free Peanuts cartoons from 2 to 4 p.m. From 5 to 7 p.m., free video gaming will be available for teens. From 8 to 9 p.m., short films and live music will entertain movie fans before the screening of “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” at 9 pm. The Vashon Theatre concession stand will sell popcorn and treats before and during the show.
After the Gene Wilder family classic wraps up at 10:30 p.m., a special late- night horror flick will start at 11 p.m.
VFS’ Leslie McMichael said, “Vashon is so lucky to have a wonderful vintage movie theater. There’s no better place to see films on the island.”
