Boys’ soccer teams off to strong start

The Vashon High School boys’ soccer team started off their season last Saturday away at Bremerton High School with a 5-0 victory from the varsity squad and a 2-1 victory from JV.
The game started off intensely with Vashon controlling the majority of the game through accurate, strong passing and pressuring hard off the ball.
Junior Finley Oswald scored the first goal of the season with an amazing finish after senior outside back Christian White set him up perfectly. A couple minutes later, junior Tommy Delargy doubled the score with a shot that drilled into the lower right corner of the goal, assisted by junior Ethan Davis. The Pirates ended the first half 2-0 and without receiving a single shot on goal.
Once the second half started, the Vashon Pirates put themselves once again on the scoreboard when junior left back Elliot Eades rocketed a shot onto the far post.
The sidelines erupted with cheers as the ball dinged in the back of the net. Delargy once again put himself on the scoreboard, scoring a brace. Later on in the game, senior Alden Hinden-Stevenson scored the last goal of the day with an assist from freshman Jakob Heuschert, who impressed with dizzying foot skills. That ended the game 5-0.
The Pirates showed an impressive game with their passing, pressing and depth in the squad. Other key players in the game were senior center backs Kieran Enzian and Ryan Weller. These defenders kept the opponents from ever shooting on goal.
The varsity squad includes 12 seniors that are all hungry for a successful run. Overall, everyone played great by having great chemistry on the pitch, and this is one of the common threads of all winning teams. There is a good feeling among the VHS varsity players for the upcoming season.
The junior varsity squad also came home with a 2-1 victory. Freshman Chris Fontina scored the first goal and technically the first score of the season for VHS soccer. It came off a free kick from 30 yards out. The opponent goalie never had a chance. The game was later tied 1-1 but toward the dying minutes of the game, freshman Bassam Almustafa dribbled down the wing, crossing the ball toward Freshman Chance Mentink, who pushed it into the back of the net sealing a 2-1 victory.
The Pirates have three games coming up this week playing at home against Steilacoom on Monday and Klahowya on Wednesday. Both home games start at 6 p.m.
