Many islanders marked the recent holiday at the annual Memorial Day ceremony at the Vashon Cemetery.

The event included several traditional elements, including the Color Guard opening the ceremony, singing of “The Star Spangled Banner” by Marita Ericksen, and an address, delivered by Doug Kieper, at the podium. Kieper noted that Vashon is unusual in that 10 percent of its population has served in the military, compared to 3 percent nationwide. Additional highlights of the ceremony included the Vashon Singers performing “Amazing Grace” and Barry Cooper playing “Taps.”

On Sunday, island Boy Scouts placed American flags at all the veterans’ graves at the cemetery — approximately 700 in all.
