On the evenings of Sept. 21 and 22, Vashon Center for the Arts welcomed supporters to “Masquerade,” a two-night auction held at the arts center.

The event raised approximately $172,500 for the arts center, with $97,500 of those dollars specially earmarked for scholarships for islanders to participate in VCA’s art education program, said Kevin Hoffberg, executive director of the organization.

In recent years, the event had been held in a large tent, erected in VCA’s parking lot. This year, all the action took place inside the expansive digs of VCA’s new building, which opened in 2016.

According to Hoffberg, the switch in locale was a success, allowing auction-goers to step inside the Katherine L White Hall to see performances by young people who would directly benefit from the scholarship program.

“Everything we did was in search of creating a fresh new experience that did a better job meeting the needs of our patrons and guests, our artist and business donors, and our sponsors,” Hoffberg said. “That we got a lot of things right is a big bonus, but the key was our focus on our constituents.”

VCA will soon launch an end-of-year fund drive called, “Support what you love,” allowing donors to direct their donations to specific VCA programs, he added.
