VASHON WORLD AIDS DAYS
Several events, most free of charge, will take place as part of the Vashon World AIDS Days this Thursday through Sunday. “Stonewall to Border Wall,” a moderated panel and forum concentrating on activism and social justice, will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Vashon High School theater.
“Lost to AIDS,” a student art installation and exhibit, will open at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Vashon Center for the Arts.
“A Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” a variety show tribute to Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Open Space for Arts & Community — this is a ticketed event with proceeds going to benefit regional AIDS causes, though no one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Finally, a reading by Drama Dock of playwright and activist Larry Kramer’s “The Normal Heart,” directed by Charlotte Tiencken, will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, also at Open Space.
Vashon World AIDS Day was coordinated by longtime islander Peter Serko and also includes an ongoing effort with Voice of Vashon to record and archive stories of islanders affected by AIDS or lost to the disease through the years. POETRY PARTY
In connection with the Vashon Center for the Arts’ art exhibit, “Wordless Stories,” a closing event called “Fantastic Ekphrasis: Poetry Inspired by the art of Wordless Stories,” will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29. The night, curated by Vashon poets Cal Kinnear and Susan Lynch, will include performances of poems created in response to the exhibit. During the month-long show, Vashon poets were invited to compose verses in response to the work on the walls.
MIC DROP SOME MORE
The storytelling series “Mic Drop” will continue at 7 p.m. Fridays, Nov. 30, Dec. 14 and Dec. 28, at Vashon Brewing Community Pub in Vashon Village. Upcoming editions of the series, organized by Chris Boscia, will include performances by Tami Brockway Joyce, Chuck Roehm, Richard Franklin Moore, Leila Khatapoush and Truman O’Brien.
GET CHRISMASSY WITH CHORALE
Vashon Island Chorale will present “A Very Brassy Christmas” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8 (with pre-show lecture at 6:45 p.m.) and 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9 (pre-show lecture at 2:15 p.m.). The concert will be directed by Gary D. Canon, who is the choir’s artistic director. THEY’LL SING, YOU GIVE
“Will Sing for Vashon,” an evening of music by two dozen island singers and acts, will benefit local nonprofits at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Vashon Center for the Arts. The event — a chance to hear friends, neighbors and Vashon celebs performing holiday songs — has in the past been held at The Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi, but this year will move to VCA. Admission is $5, and attendees will be encouraged to donate more to nonprofits of their choice throughout the evening. Bring a checkbook or cash, and sit back and enjoy the show.
FUNNY BONES
Island performer Mik Kuhlman will offer “Funny Bones,” a one-day workshop for adults, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Hanna Barn Studios. Kulhman, an accomplished physical performer, clown and member of UMO Ensemble, said the workshop is for both the “performers and the curious” to study “presence, play and movement.” For information and registration ($75) write to mik@mikkuhlman.com.
