VoV hosts Zombie Fest
Voice of Vashon will host Zombie Fest, a costume contest and film screening, at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 31, at the Vashon Theatre. The event will unspool with a screening of the comic film, “Aaah! Zombies.” Face-painters in the lobby will apply ghoulish scars and oozing wounds to attendees, and winners of the costume contest will win prizes donated by local businesses. The evening is a benefit for VoV. Admission is $10 general and $5 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at vashontheatre.com and the theater box office. Parental caution is suggested in terms of the film.
See The Curvettes
The Curvettes, a trio made up of Arlette Moody, Elaine Ott-Rocheford and Stephanie Murray, will perform a free show at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi. The show is for all ages until 11 p.m., and 21 and older after that.
Celebrate Dia de los Muertos
A Day of the Dead celebration will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at Vashon Center for the Arts. There will be performances by the dance troupe, Baile Folklorico, clown Luz Glaxiola and other performers. Artwork by Harbor School students will also be on display, and islanders can also add items to a community “remembrance altar” outside of VCA. This is a free event, with a suggested donation of $5.
Go to a tasty fundraiser
Voice of Vashon will offer up a foody fundraiser from 12 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, at Vashon Center for the Arts — a chili cookoff that will include music by the island band, RiverBend, and a chance to watch the Seahawks game on a big-screen TV. Chili cooks will include Scotty MacLaughlin (Camp Colvos Brewing); Megan Hastings (Snapdragon); Dre Neeley (Gravy); Adam Chumas (The Hardware Store Restaurant); Chris Koerber (Earthen Bistro); Lia Lira (Bramble House); Wally Bell (Sugar Shack) and VoV radio hosts Rik Reed, Truman O’Brien and Captain Joe Wubbold. The winner will be determined by $1 audience votes. Tickets to the event, available online, are $30 general, $20 seniors and students, and free for those 12 and younger.
Hear an acclaimed author
David Guterson, an author best known for his 1994 novel, “Snow Falling on Cedars,” will be the next speaker in the “Talks on the Rock” series at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at Vashon Center for the Arts. Guterson’s appearance coincides with the publication of a new book, “Turn Around Time: A Walking Poem for the Pacific Northwest.” His talk will ponder the symbiosis between walking and writing and their longstanding association in literature. Tickets, $5 to $15, can be purchased in advance at vashoncenterforthearts.org.
An island-centric album release
“Vashon Calling,” an album release party and music showcase, will take place at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8 at Open Space for Arts & Community. The party and performance will celebrate the release of an album of the same name by Vashon Events, featuring an all-island roster of music talent. There will also be a silent auction. Experience local chamber music
The Vashon-Maury Chamber Orchestra will play in concert at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Vashon Center for the Arts. Directed by Karin Choo and Justin Cole and featuring violinist Svend Rønning, the program will include Jean Sibelius’ “Andante Festivo,” Jerry Kracht’s “Three Prayers” and Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings.” Tickets, $18 to $5, can be purchased at vashoncenterforthearts.org.
Get tangled in a community talk
A free community talk and conversation, “Tangled: Why your Hair Matters to Society,” will be presented at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Vashon Havurah. Speaker Anu Taranath, who is a professor at the University of Washington specializing in global literature, identity, race and equity, will discuss the meaning of hair in context to the stories we tell ourselves about beauty, bias and belonging. It’s all about compassion
Islanders Kevin Joyce and Martha Enson, under the banner of their company En-Joy Productions, will co-present the Compassionate Leadership Summit — a gathering for those who seek to apply the practices of compassion and mindfulness in workplaces and communities — on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 8 and 9, at the University of Washington HUB, 4001 E. Stevens Way N.E., in Seattle.
The program begins at 8:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8; Saturday’s session begins at 5:30 p.m. Themes for sessions will include working with vulnerable and disenfranchised populations, corporate initiatives, skills in dealing with conflict, compassionate cities and listening to the voice of youth in creating a compassionate future. Among the approximately 40 speakers is poet and activist Merna Hecht, from Vashon. Other presenters range from Dr. Ed Taylor, Vice Provost and Dean at U.W., to Kilung Rinpoche, head of a Buddhist monastery, to social activist and trainer Jackie de la Cruz, and City Attorney Pete Holmes.
In creating the event, Joyce said he and Enson had stepped beyond what En-Joy Productions has done for many years — creating events for other clients.
“We wanted to convene a diverse group of smart, interesting people, and we wanted to serve, in some way, the current needs in our culture,” Joyce said.
