Music Mends Minds is back

Music Mends Minds, a sing-a-long event especially healing for those with dementia, is “Back in the Saddle Again,” said organizer Rich Osborne. The sing-along happens at 1:30 p.m. each Tuesday, at the Senior Center. Between COVID and the closing of Vashon Community Care, the program has been on hiatus for two years. All are welcome as Music Mends Minds gets back “On the Road Again,” said Osborne.

Let’s Talk about Living & Dying

Vashon’s “Let’s Talk about Living & Dying” group will host Sue and Israel Shotridge during their next meeting, which will be held via Zoom at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 3.

The Shotridges will discuss death and mourning in the Tlingit tradition, as traditional Tlingit protocol, activities, ceremonies and events are held are certain times during the immediate mourning period and year following a death.

The Shotridges have participated many times in these traditional events and ceremonies over the last 35 years in southeast Alaska, in Ketchikan and Wrangell, their tribal villages. To attend, contact Jane Neubauer at janeneubauer@janeonvashon.com for the Zoom link.

Celebrate borrowing on Vashon

National Library Week is April 3 to 10, and Vashon lending institutions are joining forces in an island-wide celebration.

On Vashon, residents can not only borrow books, but also tools, musical instruments, medical equipment, and more. Eight local organizations have been collaborating to use National Library Week to shine a light on what’s available, totally free of charge, to borrow on Vashon.

Special events during the week will include an open house at the Care Closet, which offers free medical equipment and supplies, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 5, at 18623 Vashon Hwy. SW. There will also be a sale at the Tool Library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, and a series of home visits by the mobile library, Vashon Reads, starting on Wednesday, April 6. Helping kids manage stress and anxiety

The speaker, Yvonne-Monique Aviva — an island parent, family education specialist, and the program director of Young Adult Services at Treehouse for Kids — will offer expertise to help families successfully navigate life’s stressful situations in healthy ways.
