Film screening honors Indigenous and island farmers

Celebrate Earth Week with a free screening of “Inhabitants,” an award-winning film profiling the land stewardship practices of five Native tribes, which will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, at Vashon Theatre. A short program will introduce the event, with Kim Kambak of Littlest Bird Farm, who has worked in the Southwest with the Navaho, and also Lisa Hasselman of Forest Garden Farm, who will speak of her experiences as a Vashon farmer and about her involvement on the board of Vashon Island Growers Association. Audience members will receive a map of island farms plus a free token worth $5 to spend.

Holy Week at Lutheran Church

Vashon Lutheran Church Holy Week services will be held at 7 p.m. on Good Friday, April 15; and at 10:30 a.m. Easter Sunday, April 17. The Easter service will be followed by a coffee hour in the fellowship hall. The guest pastor for both services is Rev. Tom Aitken. All are welcome.

The hunt is on for eggs at Ober Park

Stop by Ober Park at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 16th for the Vashon Park District’s Eggstravaganza Egg Hunt!

This egg hunt is designed for children ages one to ten, and will include sectioned-off areas for specific age groups.

The egg hunt was offered for many years by the Vashon Island Chamber of Commerce, but was discontinued two years ago. By the urging of island kids and one very large bunny, the Park District was happy to help.

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, contact Recreation Manager Eric Wyatt at ewyatt@vashonparks.org or 206-463-9602.

Annual All-Island Kids Trout Derby

Free to the public and open to all island children 12 and younger, the derby offers family fun and the opportunity to win prizes including new fishing gear. The club will also serve up hot dogs, chili and cold pop at reasonable prices.

All children must be accompanied by an adult. Sign-up begins at 11:30. Participants should bring their own basic trout gear and bait. No dogs, please.

Ferries add weeknight sailing

Vashon passengers traveling to Seattle on weeknights now have an added option. The 8:15 p.m. departure from Vashon to Southworth will now also make a stop in Fauntleroy. Passengers looking to travel to Fauntleroy in the evenings will now be loaded on that sailing. After arriving and unloading passengers in Southworth, the boat will then depart for Fauntleroy at 8:35 p.m.
