Audubon stewardship party
Join Vashon Audubon for a stewardship work party in support of the Vashon Land Trust and our native wildlife.
The event takes place from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Paradise Valley Preserve.
Meet at the Judd Creek Loop trailhead on 111th Ave. S.W. Bring work gloves, wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather. Tools will be provided, though if you have a favorite shovel, please bring it.

Introduction to Zen
Puget Sound Zen Center will offer a free event for those thinking about starting or re-booting a meditation practice. In an informal session, presenters will outline how meditation can help, beginning and refresher Zen meditation basics, Zen tradition and the Zen Center, and classes and events to come. Bring your questions and a friend. The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Puget Sound Zen Center, located at 18005 Vashon Highway SW.
Japan Fest
Vashon’s 5th annual Japan Fest will take place from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at Mukai Farm & Garden, located at 18017 107th Ave. SW.
This free, all-ages event will include dancing, a children’s village, food, a “nominoichi” market of Asian collectibles, presentations by vendors and nonprofit organizations, Taiko drumming, and more.
Also included will be the world premiere of the play, “Kichi in the Woods of Present Memory,” written by Bryan Willis, directed by Charlotte Tiencken for Vashon Repertory Theater, and performed by the AIE Taiko Drummers.
The day’s headline performer will be legendary keyboardist Philip Woo, a Garfield/Franklin High School graduate who is now a highly in-demand artist residing in Tokyo.
Vashon Reads’ red bookmobile will host a free book giveaway featuring stories from Japanese American and Asian authors.
Japan Fest will close with a walk through a Lantern Labyrinth, and then a free 8 p.m. showing of Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved film, “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” at Vashon Theatre.

Havurah Bash
Vashon Havurah will hold its annual community bash and fundraiser from 4 to 7 p.m. on the Havurah grounds at 14401 Westside Hwy. SW. Croaker, a bluegrass and Klezmer band, will perform; there will also be lawn games, a sprinkler for the kids, a local food truck, other nibbles and a no-host bar. All are welcome.
Tickets, on sale at tinyurl.com/ycy25ka7, are $12 in advance or $15 at the event. Children 12 and younger are free. All attending are asked to donate to a silent auction — a table will be set up to process donations at the party.
The event is dedicated to the Havurah’s beloved late member, Philip Cushman.
Commemorating 9/11
The Vashon Island Chorale will sing Mozart’s “Requiem,” at 4 p.m. Sunday, at Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA), to commemorate the 21st anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
Vashon Island Fire & Rescue will also hold a candlelit ceremony at its 9/11 Memorial located in front of VIFR’s main station on Bank Road, from 7 to 8 p.m. All are invited and may bring their own candles or use candles provided by VIFR.
Admission to the Chorale’s performance is free, with donations for VCA’s Blue Heron Education Center’s renovation projects accepted.
Vashon Nature Center celebrates
Vashon Nature Center will celebrate its 10th anniversary from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, with a gathering in a private island garden. Find out more and reserve your spot at vashonnaturecenter.org/events.
Free pickleball in September
Try out Vashon Island Golf & Country Club’s new pickleball courts this month. Free daytime drop-in times in September are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m; pickleball nights will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, and Wednesday, Sept. 21. This fall, a dome will be raised over the courts so that they are available for indoor play as well.
Garden Club
The Vashon-Maury Island Garden Club will meet at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, in the multi-purpose room at the Bethel Church. Guest speaker, Master Gardener Fred Wemer, will join club experts in welcoming members and the public.
Learn more about bond options
The Vashon Island School Board will host the first of two community forums intended to solicit feedback from the public on the upcoming capital projects bond that is expected to be before Vashon island voters in February 2023. The forum, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, in Vashon High School’s gym, will help the school board decide which projects, and at what funding level, will be included in the bond. Vashon to Voters
Voice of Vashon’s “Brown Briefly” show has a new segment, with mostly local guests describing the work they are doing to make the world a better place. The show’s next segment, airing at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 101.9 FM, will have an interview with Debby Jackson, organizer of Indivisible Vashaon’s Vashon to Voters postcare writing group. Join hosts Truman O’Brien, Bruce Haulman, Craig Beles and Kevin Jones for their talk with Jackson, to learn how Vashon to Voters supports progressive candidates in the November general election here in Washington State and across the country.
Webinar on mass incarceration
An online webinar, “Ending Mass Incarceration in Washington State,” will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22.
Presenters will include Larry Jefferson, executive director of the Washington State Office of Public Defense, and David Trieweiler, director of the End Mass Incarceration Project for the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

King County Recycling Event
King County’s large household residential recycling event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at Vashon High School. The event will accept such items as bulky wood waste, computer monitors, papers for secure shredding, broken concrete asphalt, rock, brick, toilets and sinks, electronic equipment, mattresses, scrap metal, polystyrene block and packing peanuts, televisions, and tires.
