An investigative documentary, “Children of the Vine,” detailing the lasting impact on public health of the herbicide Roundup, will be screened at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Vashon High School Theater.

The film was directed by award-winning filmmaker Brian Lilla, who interviewed Napa Valley farm workers and others who have had heavy exposure to glyphosate — the primary active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup.

The film also digs deep into Monsanto’s 40-year campaign to convince the public that Roundup is as “safe as salt,” and champions solution-driven farming practices that do not put public health at risk and can feed the world.

After premiering at the Sonoma International Film Festival, the film is now part of a national community screening campaign that enables audiences to engage with farmers on organic weed management practices.

Following the film, there will be a brief question and answer session with local experts Michael Laurie and Diane Emerson, from Vashon’s Garden Green, and Shelley Headley, from Headley Holistics and VI Horse Supply.

These presenters have a history of local activism to end the use of Roundup and glyphosate in Vashon’s delicate island ecosystem and beyond.

Laurie and Emerson are the forces behind Garden Green, which provides education and promotes activism on nontoxic alternatives to toxic pesticides, for home gardeners, farmers, retailers, parks departments, municipalities, nonprofit organizations, and corporations.

Headley is the co-founder of Headley Holistics, LLC, and co-owner of VI Horse Supply, Inc.

Her continued work over the years, with experts in the field, includes founding Headley Holistics, LLC — an enterprise that has created a comprehensive, all-natural heavy metal and glyphosate detox protocol for horses.

At this free event, a $5 donation is suggested to help support Vashon Island Growers Association, which is presenting the film in partnership with Headley Holistics, VI Horse Supply, and Garden Green.
