A sure sign of summer: a two-month season for Dungeness, red rock, and tanner crab has opened in the waters off Vashon.

The season runs from July 2 to Aug. 28, on Sundays and Mondays only. All crabbing gear must be out of the water on the other days of the week.

On Vashon, crabbing season was closed in 2018 and 2019, due to dwindling Dungeness crab populations.

For complete information on limits and rules for Marine Area 11 (Tacoma and Vashon Island) visit online.

With the closure of Vashon’s licensing office in the Wallflower Building, fish and game licenses can still be obtained at Island Home Center and Lumber.

One eager person who avidly loves to go crabbing, however, told The Beachcomber that bait was hard to find at Vashon Thriftway last weekend, and that Island Lumber had a line of people looking to purchase licenses.
