• EVENTS •

Juneteenth: Celebrate Juneteenth from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, June 19 at the Vashon Center for the Arts Atrium with African drumming, acoustic guitar, education, snacks and a cash bar. Childcare is provided.

Bird walk: Join Margie Morgan and the Vashon Bird Alliance on Saturday, June 21, for a quiet time of birding in Margie’s backyard. Meet at Ober Park at 9 a.m., then carpool to Margie’s home. All our welcome for this relaxed morning of bird observation.

17th Annual Low Tide Celebration: This beloved Vashon Park District event, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at Point Robinson Park, celebrates Maury Island Aquatic Reserve. The day includes beach walks with Vashon naturalists, tours of the historic Point Robinson Lighthouse, story time and activities for children, beach clean-up with Zero Waste Vashon, paddle-boarding over eel grass with paddle boards and aqua-viewers and much more. Food and beverages will be provided by local vendors. A free shuttle bus runs along Pt. Robinson Road to the lower parking lot, with the first bus at 10:30 a.m. and the last bus at 3 p.m.

Youth sports camp: Vashon Baseball Academy and Vashon Basketball Club will host a three-day dual youth basketball and softball summer camp from July 15-17 for girls in grades one through six. Registration is $100 per camp or $175 for both camps. Equipment will be available for use during the camp, but attendees should bring a water bottle, backpack and small snack. • PRIDE MONTH •

Celebrate Pride Month and the island’s vibrant LGBTQ+ community this June with a variety of events.

Love and Modems: At 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 20, learn how LGBTQ people used technology to explore identity, find love and access resources for those living with AIDS in the internet’s early days at a talk at Vashon Library titled “Love and Modems.”

Be an ally: From 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, June 21, Not on Our Island hosts a community talk on “How to show up as a trans ally,” hosted by counselor Rachel LordKenaga, an art therapist and mental health counselor. Register at hello@notonourisland.org.

Lesbian Lunch on the Lawn: From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, lesbians will convene at the Frog Holler Park field for lunch and community-building. Bring your own everything: lunch, blanket/chair and games. This is a substance free (including tobacco) event for adults for community building, with no pets, please. Carpooling is encouraged. Parking is limited; be prepared to park on Wax Orchard Road along the road. Look for the Pride flags.

Rainbow book club: From 2-3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25 at Vashon Library, students in grades 6-8 can enjoy the kick off to the library’s ROYGBIV (Rainbow) Summer Book Club at a meeting that will will include activities, snacks and picking up books for the summer.

• RECURRING •

Vashon Senior Center: Enjoy a hot lunch at noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and activities throughout the week. On Monday, June 23, the book group discusses “The Great Gatsby” at 1:30 p.m., and the monthly board of directors meeting is held 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. At 1 p.m. on Wednesday, June 25, learn about talking to your doctor and managing appointments with David Berger. Vashon Death Café: This is a discussion group — rather than a grief support or counselling session — which intends to raise awareness of death and help people make the most of their finite lives. Farmers Market: The Vashon Island Growers Association’s Farmers Market runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday at the Village Green through September 27. Visit vigavashon.org/market.

Free community dinners: Held Mondays through Fridays from 5-5:30 p.m. at the Vashon Presbyterian Church (17708 Vashon Highway SW) by the Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness.

• PUBLIC MEETINGS •

Vashon Health Care District board: The district holds two special meetings this week for its board retreat; a meeting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 18 focuses on the board internally, and a meeting 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 19 focuses on the board’s communication and collaboration with the community. Vashon Park District board: 6:15 p.m., Tuesday, June 24 at the Ober Park Administration Building, 17130 Vashon Hwy SW and via Zoom. The board meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month. Visit vashonparks.org.
